Good posture makes daily life better

Good posture is more than just looking taller and appearing more confident, although these are important benefits too. Good posture has been shown to contribute to multiple health benefits such as:

  • increased lung capacity
  • improved digestion
  • better bone and joint alignment
  • stronger core and upper back
  • reduced lower back pain
  • reduced headaches
  • better form during exercise

Not all poor posture is the same. When we start to look a little more closely, slight variations become noticeable - for example, someone with rounded shoulders may have lordosis, a flat back, or kyphosis. Knowing which muscles are tight (and therefore need stretching) and which are weak (and therefore need strengthening) helps you to correct your posture. Correcting poor posture early on is important to avoid the body from making changes to compensate as some of these changes can become permanent, such as seen in someone with severe kyphosis.  It's important to do posture strengthening and stretching exercises often, even If you already have "practically perfect” posture!

How is your posture? Look in a mirror, ask a friend, or check with your trainer. The UK national health site has more information on postural problems and corrections, including photos and exercises.
