Volunteering with Esquimalt’s Emergency Program is a way to make a meaningful impact in your community. Whether you're ready to be on the front lines or prefer to help behind the scenes, there's a place for you.
Training is provided. No experience is necessary. Everyone is welcome.

Volunteer opportunities
Emergency Support Services (ESS)
Help people when they need it most.
ESS volunteers support evacuees with short-term shelter, food, clothing, and comfort during emergencies like fires or evacuations.
You’ll learn how to:
- Set up and run Reception Centres or Group Lodging
- Support people facing displacement
- Use the provincial ERA registration system
- Work as part of a trained, coordinated response team
ESS is a great fit for anyone who’s empathetic, calm under pressure, or interested in care-focused roles.
Emergency Radio Communications (ERC)
When the phones go down, this team keeps talking.
ERC volunteers support backup communication between Esquimalt and regional partners during emergencies.
You'll learn:
- How to operate VHF/UHF radios and portable units
- The basics of emergency communications protocols
- How to support Reception Centres and the Emergency Operations Centre
Great for people who like tech, logistics, or problem-solving.
Resilient Neighbourhoods Program
Start where you live.
Help strengthen your community by building connections, sharing resources, and making emergency preparedness more accessible for everyone.
As a neighbourhood champion, you can:
- Host a block meeting or preparedness workshop
- Share preparedness material or emergency planning tips with neighbours
- Check in with people who may need extra support
- Act as a point of contact for your street or building
There’s no one way to participate this program is flexible and welcoming. Whether you're into organizing events, spreading the word, or just being a friendly face, you’ll be helping make your neighbourhood stronger, safer, and more connected.
Training & time commitment
- Most roles involve a few hours a month, with extra activity during activations or events.
- Volunteers receive free training, ongoing support, and invitations to drills, workshops, and appreciation events.
- You don’t have to be on call—your involvement can be shaped around your availability.
