Pipe Ownership

The sanitary sewer collection system is composed of three main parts. These components are: sewer laterals (private), municipal sewers (public) and CRD sewers (public). Each of these components are owned and maintained by various parties. See figure below.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The CRD sewers are generally located in right of ways and are the conveyance system from municipal sewers. Municipal sewers include public sewers, mains and the sewer lateral from the main to the property line of the right of way (ROW). The sewer line from the property line to a home is owned and maintained by the property owner.

Of the entire system the two largest components are the municipal sewers and the sewer laterals. When measuring the total length of these components on average public sewers are approximately 45% and private sewers are 55% of total pipe length..
