Update August 26, 2020: Pool Re-opening Date Announced

In a much-anticipated move to resume recreation services, the Township of Esquimalt is moving forward with reopening the aquatics facility at the Esquimalt Recreation Centre this September.

Recreation staff have used the past few months to make the most of the pool’s shutdown time by performing extensive maintenance work. Visitors to the facility will see changes in layout and in processes, including limited access to change rooms.

The facility will have a soft-reopening September 15-17 that will allow staff to make necessary adjustments to keep everyone safe as the gradual return of visitors continues. Reservations for these sessions will open online (esquimalt.ca/recreation) and by phone (250-412-8500) at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8. The full re-opening is scheduled for September 21 with attendance by advanced reservation only. Reservations for these sessions will begin September 18.

The initial pool schedule will include waterfit classes and lap swims with dedicated times for adults, families or parents and tots. While the hot tub, sauna and stream room will remain closed, “Bubble Swims” will be premiering in October. Families and close social groups can rent the lap and lifestyle pools for private use at an hourly rate on Saturday afternoons. The lap pool, waterfit classes and family swims will all be available for registration during other scheduled times.

While parents are also anticipating the return of swim lessons, these activities will resume at a later date. The Canadian Red Cross has advised of new protocols for swim lessons which include instructors teaching from the pool deck and a requirement for all preschool lessons and Swim Kids 1-4 to have a parent participating in the pool. These protocols present significant changes for staff and public alike. “As we determine how to adapt and staff are trained in these new protocols, we anticipate a gradual return to swim lessons beginning with private lessons, likely in October,” said Aquatics Programmer Meghan Nicklin.

The reopening is in alignment with the Province of B.C.’s Restart Plan. The British Columbia Recreation and Parks Association and Royal Lifesaving Society of B.C. have provided guidance for the safe operation of pools and aquatic facilities.

Update August 25, 2020: Registration for Day Camps Due to Adjusted School Re-opening Available Friday, August 28th at 8:00 a.m.

Esquimalt Parks and Recreation will have day camps available during the modified re-opening of schools on September 8th and 9th. Day camps will run 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. As full details from local schools will be published on August 26th, staff will adapt programming following this announcement with day camp registration opening on Friday, August 28th at 8:00 a.m. Registration will be available both online (esquimalt.ca/recreation) or by phone (250.412.8500) at this time.

Registration will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis for all families seeking care. If a program is full, please add your child to the waitlist. While there is no guarantee, best efforts will be made to ensure staffing and facility space is available to accommodate families placed on a waitlist.

Thank you for your patience as we continue to respond to this ever-evolving situation.

Update August 12, 2020: A re-cap on where we are at

As the gradual return of programs and services continues at Esquimalt Recreation facilities, here’s the latest on your favourite program areas:

Fitness

Weight room and select fitness classes are available by advanced registration. Upon entry, guests are provided with their own sanitization kit and are able to enjoy a 1.5 hour session in the weight room or a group fitness class where small class sizes ensure physical distancing can be maintained. Click here to reserve your space.

Day Camps

Day camps will be offered to support families with the modified re-opening of schools. Details, once available, will be shared through the Township of Esquimalt website at esquimalt.ca/camps.

Arena Re-opening

The arena ice will be going in at the Archie Browning Sports Centre with activities resuming August 28th for sport organizations, and public skating (by reservation) to resume after Labour Day. Curling remains uncertain, with updates available likely mid-September.

Pool Re-opening

Staff are approaching the final stages of maintenance, after adapting to complete this work during the pandemic which will prevent the need for prolonged annual pool maintenance closures in future years. Once the maintenance is complete, the pools can be filled (heated and treated). With water in the tanks, staff will be trained and we will be able to welcome you back shortly thereafter.

Additional Fall Programs

We’ll be expanding our recreation programs this fall to offer more fitness classes, including yoga and Pilates, art and sport programs. It is anticipated additional programming will begin the week of September 28th with physical distancing and additional sanitization standards in place. While this is subject to change, the latest updates will be available through the Township website. Registration would open approximately 2-weeks in advance of program start dates.

Reception Hours

Our friendly reception team is available 6:30am-6:30pm Monday-Friday and 8:00am-12:00pm Saturday by phone at 250.412.8500 to answer your questions and assist you with registrations.

We will continue to share updates as more information becomes available.

Update, July 31, 2020: Survey Response & Next Steps

Thank you for the tremendous response to our recent community survey. We received 1,003 responses and know you are eager to be enjoying more amenities, programs and services through Esquimalt Parks & Recreation. You expressed priorities for activities with our gradual return being pool programs (lap swimming, family swimming, hydrotherapy time, waterfit and private swim lessons), yoga and Pilates classes, and family skating. Here's what you can expect, specific to these activities, as we continue to respond to this unprecedented situation:

  • Pool re-opening date to be announced in the coming weeks. Where we are now & what needs to be done to re-open the pool, we are:
    • in the final stages of additional maintenance (see photo below of the duct sock replacement and repair work being done on the air handling unit).
    • waiting to receive final Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the lifeguard team.
    • having our supervisory staff and Instructor Trainers orientated to the new training standards.
    • coordinating the additional training required for all aquatics team members (please note this is facility specific and cannot be fully completely until after pools are filled).

Your continued patience as we proceed with the gradual return and work through the unique circumstances of our facility are appreciated.

  • Yoga & Pilates will return in September! A program schedule will be available in mid-August.
  • The Operating Plan for the Archie Browning Sports Centre is going through the approval process. We are actively receiving ice-user groups COVID Risk Assessment and Response Plans to ensure once the operating plan is approved, rental agreements can be issued shortly thereafter. Allocation of ice, including scheduling of Family Skating, is being coordinated within this process.

We will continue to share updates as more information becomes available. We encourage you to follow us on social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) to see the latest behind-the-scenes photos of work underway.

Update July 15, 2020: Community Recreation Survey Launched

With physical distancing and sanitization requirements, our program and service offerings will be different.  Plans and authorizations required to resume activities are unique for each activity.  For some activitiesm authorizing agencies have indiciated it would be unlikely to resume in 2020 (we have indicated wherte this is applicable on the following survey).  Your participation in this 2-minute survey will help us better understand the needs of the community.  The survey will be available until Sunday, July 26, 2020.  Thank for taking the time to share your thoughts.

Update July 3, 2020: Water to turn on at the Splash Pad on July 6

The Township of Esquimalt’s splash pad at the popular Esquimalt Adventure Park will be delighting local children starting Monday, July 6. The  water will be turned on from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily with the washroom open the same hours.

“While we’re pleased to have such a wonderful community amenity in Esquimalt, we need folks to be considerate when enjoying the park.”, said Mayor Barbara Desjardins. “If the park is too busy, please return later.  If you’ve been there for a while and notice people waiting, consider moving elsewhere so that everyone has an opportunity to play.”

Like with any public space, if users feel any sign of illness, they are asked to stay home. The reopening is in alignment with the Province of B.C.’s Restart Plan. The British Columbia Recreation and Parks Association and Royal Lifesaving Society of B.C. have provided guidelines for the safe operation of playgrounds and water parks.

Update June 19, 2020: Information on the Aquatics Centre

Health authorities have advised it will be some time before indoor aquatic facilities open. The provincial focus is on the re-opening on beachfront areas and outdoor facilities. Update June 18, 2020: Wellness Centre (weight room) Re-opening

The wellness centre will open Tuesday, June 23 for limited hours as staff evaluate the new configuration and make any needed adjustments. After a short trial period, the fitness centre hours will expand as of June 29 to accommodate more guests. People interested in coming for a workout can sign up online through the Township’s recreation registration system or can contact the recreation desk directly. There will be no drop-ins to ensure an even distribution of people.

A variety of themed summer camps, including opportunities for before and after camp care, begin June 29. The camps will run primarily outdoors and any out-trips will be in walking distance to avoid the need for a bus.

Staff are in the process of evaluating field access for sports leagues as well as drop-in fitness classes with dates being finalized in the near future. The indoor aquatic facilities remain closed for the present time.

Update June 15, 2020: Summer Camp Adaptations Announced

Esquimalt Parks and Recreation staff are working hard to ensure your child has a great summer!  Here is how we are adapting our programs to ensure they are safe for everyone, in compliance with physical distancing and hygiene protocols, and in response to changes surrounding facility and amenity availability:

  • Camps will predominantly operate outdoors;

Update June 5, 2020: Timed Passes Being Refunded

Unfortunately, due to provincially mandated safety protocols, Esquimalt Parks and Recreation will be cancelling all time limited membership passes such as annual passes and including regional passes (pro-rated from March 17, 2020) until further notice.   All pass holders will have a prorated amount credited to their account. The credit may be used towards the purchase of single activity registrations, future admission punch cards, program registrations, and/or facility bookings once our facilities’ programs and services resume operation.

Please note that we are not selling any monthly or annual passes for the foreseeable future. If you would prefer to have a refund, please contact Reception at 250-412-8500 and we will be happy to assist you. We appreciate that our programs and services are important to you, and  we are working on plans for resuming services as soon as possible.

Our services will be opening in phases and we will provide you with specific dates, and a description of the modified services, with as much notice as possible.  When we do re-open, advanced reservation will be required. No walk-ins will be permitted. More information will be made available in this capacity as specific plans for re-opening are announced; your continued patience is appreciated.  Please also know that our guiding representatives of swimming pools are currently planning for the re-opening of waterfront areas and outdoor pools in the province; it is not anticipated that indoor pools will be permitted to re-open for some time.

It will take time to implement these new protocols to ensure the health and safety of our customers and staff, which remains our priority. As details are determined, we will continue to keep you informed. You can find updates on our programs and facility planning on our website at esquimalt.ca/recreation. In the meantime, should you have any questions about our services we’re here and available to help you. Please call or email should you have any questions at 250-412-8500 or [email protected].

Esquimalt Parks and Recreation continues to monitor the information and guidelines provided by the Province, Island Health, and other authorities as we develop plans to re-open our facilities in a manner that ensures the safety of both the public and our staff. Update June 4, 2020: Playgrounds re-opening on Tuesday, June 9

Families in Esquimalt will get to revisit some familiar stomping grounds starting Tuesday, June 9. Playgrounds in the Township of Esquimalt will open to the public after closing on March 20 due to concerns about the spread of COVID-19 .

“Our residents value our neighbourhood playgrounds and we are thrilled to make them available again”, said Mayor Barbara Desjardins. “We are hopeful that with our community following Dr. Henry’s guidelines during this Phase 2 process, we can look to resuming more of the activities we have missed during COVID-19”.

Although there is no evidence of COVID-19 transmission in playground environments, Island Health has released suggestions to help to reduce the potential risks. At Esquimalt playgrounds, parents and caregivers will see signs sharing the health authority’s advice:

  •  Sick children or adults must not enter the playground or spray park
  • Adults should maintain 2 metres of physical distance
  • Children should wash their hands before and after using the playground or spray park
  • They need to avoid overcrowding
  • The playground equipment is not being disinfected

See full news release here.
