Swimming Pool Guidelines for Participants

The Esquimalt Recreation Centre aquatics facility (lifestyle pool and lap pool) is reopening after closing as we responded to the COVID-19 pandemic. For the safety of public and staff please carefully review the following:

Swimming Lessons: October 20, 2020

Swimming lessons have now opened.  See HERE for most up to date information. 

Soft-reopening: September 15, 16, 17, 2020

This week will allow our team to make necessary adjustments as the gradual reopening continues to keep everyone safe. Reservation for these sessions will open online (esquimalt.ca/recreation) and by phone (250.412.8500) at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8th.  

Re-opening: September 21, 2020

Modified schedule in place with swim 5:30am-7:00pm, by advanced reservation only. Reservations for these sessions will open at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, September 18th. After which, reservations will be available for up to 14 days in advance for lap swimming, adult swim, family swims, and parent/tot swims. Waterfit will be available on a month-to-month basis, with single class reservations being permitted where space allows.

At this time the lifestyle pool and lap pool will be re-opening, and the hot tub, sauna and steam room will remain closed.  

Things will be different, please continue reading to understand how we will be operating for the safety of public and staff going forward, in accordance with directives from Public Health:


General Information 

  • Please stay home if you are sick. If you need to assess your symptoms, please call 8-1-1 or use the BC COVID-19 Self-Assessment tool.
  • Physical distancing is not optional. Those who are unable to follow the guidelines will be asked to leave the pool. Patrons must stay  2 metres apart from one another and staff.
  • There are no refunds for your reserved time. If you are sick, please contact us before your reserved time and we will be happy to apply a credit to your account.
  • Masks and face coverings that cover your nose and mouth are not allowed to be worn while you are in the water. 

Getting Ready For Your Pool Visit 

  • Please come “swim ready”: dressed in your swimsuit, as this will assist us in getting you into the pool on time.
  • Due to occupancy limitations, our change rooms can only accommodate a small number of people at any given time. Please be courteous of others and limit your time.
  • Bring your own water bottle. Water fountains on the pool deck are not available.
  • Lockers are not available in the accessible change room.  We encourage patrons to keep personal items at a minimum. You will receive a laundry basket upon arrival to store personal items in which will be disinfected before and after use.
  • Your registration limits you to the time slot and pool space booked. No exceptions.

Arriving at the Centre 

  • Only those with a reserved space will be permitted into the pool at their allocated time. Please enter the facility by the marked entrance near the lacrosse box no more than 10 minutes prior to your assigned swim time. Please maintain a 2 metre distance from other while waiting for staff to check you in.
  • You must arrive “swim ready”. In order to maintain physical distancing and traffic flow within the accessible change room, change rooms will not be available at the start of each swim.

During Your Pool Visit 

  • Everyone must wash hands when entering the pool area with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and have a quick, cleansing shower before using the pool.
  • Please refrain from congregating in the water to allow for physical distancing of others and remain in your reserved space, e.g. lap lane or lifestyle pool. During this phase of re-opening, to ensure physical distancing can be maintain access between pools will not be permitted.
  • Patrons in need of physical assistance MUST receive help from a family member (lifeguards/staff will not be able to provide any physical assistance).
  • The hot tub, sauna, and steam room are closed.
  • Snorkels are prohibited.
  • Do not spit or blow your nose in the water.
  • Bathrooms will be available.
  • Please be prepared to exit the facility at the end of your allotted time.  Your 90 minutes reservation includes access to both the pool and change room.

After Your Swim 

  • Showers are limited to a quick rinse only. All personal grooming must be done at home.
  • In order to accommodate all our patrons, everyone must move as quickly as possible through the change rooms.
  • If leaving the facility wet is an option, please consider doing so to allow change room space for those who this is not an option.

Lap Swimming & Adult Swim 

Reserved for: Adult 16+; Lap swimming; water walking; rehabilitation and/or therapy.

Description: Adults will have the option of booking a lane, shared with one other patron, OR space in the Lifestyle Pool. Lanes will be booked as “deep end start” or “shallow end start” and will fall into one of four categories: Fast, Moderate, Slow and water-walking. Lane bookings do not include access to the Lifestyle Pool. Training equipment (flutter boards, pull buoys, dumbbells and noodles) will be available upon arrival and will be sanitized between swims/users. Snorkels are prohibited at this time.

Those booking in the Lifestyle pool will have access to said pool including the river/vortex. There is a maximum occupancy of four patrons in the river/vortex; patrons are asked to limit their time using this feature to ensure everyone has access. Pool toys and mats are available upon request and will be sanitized between swims/users. The spray features, including waterfall, are unavailable at this time. Patrons booking the Lifestyle pool will not have access to the lap pool during their booking.

Lap Swimming & Family Swim 

Reserved for: Adults 16+, Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied, in the water at all times, by an adult 16+.

Description: Adults will have the option of booking a lane, shared with one other patron, OR space in the Lifestyle Pool. Lanes will be booked as “deep end start” or “shallow end start” and will fall into one of four categories: Fast, Moderate, Slow and water-walking. Lane bookings do not include access to the Lifestyle Pool. Training equipment (flutter boards, pull buoys, dumbbells and noodles) will be available upon arrival and will be sanitized between swims/users. Snorkels are prohibited at this time.

Families/bubbles will have access to the Lifestyle Pool. To book a family/bubble into this swim: one adult will book a space and indicate how many additional patrons they will be bringing with them.  A family/bubble can consist up to a maximum of five patrons (2 adults and 3 children or 1 adult and 4 children). One adult can bring up to 3 children under the age of 7. Adults are required to be in the water with children at all times and must keep all children under 7 within arm’s reach. Pool toys and mats are available upon request and will be sanitized between swims/users. All spray features are unavailable at this time.

Lap Swimming, Adult & Parent and Tot 

Reserved for: Adults 16+, Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied, in the water at all times, by an adult 16+.

Description: Adults will have the option of booking a lane, shared with one other patron, OR space in the Lifestyle Pool. Lanes will be booked as “deep end start” or “shallow end start” and will fall into one of four categories: Fast, Moderate, Slow and water-walking. Lane bookings do not include access to the Lifestyle Pool. Training equipment (flutter boards, pull buoys, dumbbells and noodles) will be available upon arrival and will be sanitized between swims/users. Snorkels are prohibited at this time.

Adults booking in the Lifestyle pool will have access to said pool including the river/vortex. Patrons can book space for themselves and their baby/tot (child under the age of 5) in the Lifestyle Pool during this swim. There is a maximum occupancy of four patrons in the river/vortex; patrons are asked to limit their time using this feature to ensure everyone has access. Pool toys, dolphin seats and mats are available upon request and will be sanitized between swims/users. The spray features, including waterfall, are unavailable at this time. Patrons booking the Lifestyle pool will not have access to the lap pool during their booking.

Waterfit & Family Swim 

Reserved for: Adults 16+, Children under the age of 5 must be accompanied, in the water at all times, by an adult 16+.

Description: Waterfit will be booked in one month (4 session) pre-registered sets. As space permits, single class admission will also be available. Waterfit participants will have access to the main pool and change room for the 90 minute session including their 50 minute class. All Waterfit sessions, at this time, are Shallow Fit Classes: Moderate to high intensity, moderate impact (Beginner to Advanced). This class features interval training, power exercises and movement through the water to challenge participants. A mixture of cardio, strength, abdominal work and stretching is provided and instructors use a variety of exercises and equipment to keep the classes new and exciting.

Families/bubbles will have access to the Lifestyle Pool. To book a family/bubble into this swim: one adult will book a space and indicate how many additional patrons they will be brining with them.  A family/bubble can consist up to a maximum of five patrons (2 adults and 3 children or 1 adult and 4 children). One adult can bring up to 3 children under the age of 7. Adults are required to be in the water with children at all times and must keep all children under 7 within arm’s reach. Pool toys and mats are available upon request and will be sanitized between swims/users. All spray features are unavailable at this time.

Waterfit & Adult Swim 

Reserved for: Adult 16+; Lap swimming; water walking; rehabilitation and/or therapy.

Description: Waterfit will be booked in one month (4 session) pre-registered sets. As space permits, single class admission will also be available. Bubble Swim 

Starting October - Esquimalt Recreation will allow families/bubbles to rent the lap and lifestyle pools for a “Bubble Swim” at an hourly rate ($125/hour) on Saturday afternoons. Call 250.412.8505 or email [email protected] to book.

Swimming Lessons

Lessons are back starting Sunday October 25th, 2020.

Registration

  • Registration can be completed online or via phone starting Friday October 16th at 8:00am
  • Program registration will include the standard COVID-19 declaration.
  • Upon registration, children 7 and under and/or those participating in Pre-school lesson or Swim Kids 1-4 will indicate who they will be bring as their adult support (see program description). Participants must indicate one adult who will join them each class, no substitutions.

Arrival & Sign In

  • All swimmers must arrive water-ready, with their swimsuit on as changeroom will not be available before lessons.
  • Lesson participants can line up outside the glass doors to Bullen Field up to 10 minutes before their lesson begins.
  • To facilitate physical distancing, only lesson participants who are entering the water will be allowed into the building. Swimmers aged 7+ who are working on SK 5-10 may be accompanied by one adult who may sit in the designated area of the pool deck.
  • Doors will be opened 5 minutes before the lesson begins so that swimmers can be checked in
    • Standard arrival and admittance procedures will apply. Refer to COVID-19 Pool Safety Plan Addendum
  • As participants are checked in, they will be assigned a designated place to wait for their instructor once they are showered and ready
    • Places will be marked in the waiting zones 6ft apart
  • Start times will be staggered to limit the number of participants waiting at the entrance or to meet their instructors at the same time

During Lessons

  • Participants and adult/child pairs will be required to maintain 2m distance from other participants and the instructor
  • Masks are optional on deck, but cannot be worn in the water at any time
  • Participants will be assigned personal lesson equipment at the start of each lesson. Swimmers are welcome to bring their own equipment from home to use instead if desired.
  • Instructors will teach from 2m away and on the pool deck if possible. When instructors enter the water for demonstrations, swimmers will sit or stand on the edge of the pool.

After Lessons

  • Used equipment will be sanitized by an Esquimalt Recreation staff member before being put back into circulation.
  • Participants are asked not to loiter in any part of the facility including changerooms
  • Access to the pool(s) is strictly limited to the time of the lesson. Participants will be required to exit the pool(s) once the less is complete.
  • Limited changing space is available in the Accessible Changerooms after lessons. Patrons are asked to limit their time as a courtesy to others and perform personal grooming at home.
  • Exit through the back doors adjacent to the Lacrosse Box.

 

Program Descriptions:

 

Swim With Me! Preschool and Swim Kids 1-4

  • Instructors will teach and demonstrate from at least 2 meters away. This will include a combination of teaching from the deck and demonstrating skills in the water.
  • In following with recommendations from Canadian Red Cross, all swimmers under age 7 or in Preschool and Swim Kids 1 through 4 classes must be accompanied by an adult supporter who can hold and assist them in the water. In-water supporters must be comfortable in the water and able to keep their child safe during the lesson.
  • Participants and adult supporters must maintain physical distancing from the instructor and other participant/supporter pairs.
  • Deep water skills will be adapted or omitted from these lessons, as adult supporters may not be comfortable in deep water.

Swim Kids 5-10

  • Instructors will teach and demonstrate from at least 2 meters away. This will include a combination of teaching from the deck and demonstrating skills in the water. If instructor is demonstrating a skill in the water participants will sit/stand on the edge of the pool to observe.
  • Swimmers who are under the age of 7 years must be accompanied by an adult supporter who can assist them in the water.
  • Participants and adult supporters should maintain physical distancing from the instructor and other participant/supporter pairs.
  • Under Red Cross recommendations, rescue skills requiring physical contact will be omitted or adapted to maintain distance.

Private Lessons and Bubble Lessons

  • Instructors will teach and demonstrate from at least 2 meters away. This will include a combination of teaching from the deck and demonstrating skills in the water. If instructor is demonstrating a skill in the water participants will sit/stand on the edge of the pool to observe.
  • Children under age 7 or weaker swimmers must be accompanied by an adult supporter who can hold and assist them in the water. At their discretion after the first day, instructors may waive this requirement for swimmers over 7 years old (Bubble and Private Lessons ONLY)
  • Swimmers who are 7 or older do not need to be accompanied into the water, and may bring 1 adult to support and watch them from the designated viewing area.
