At their regular meeting on November 25, 2019, Council unanimously endorsed the proposed target to reduce corporate emissions by 45 per cent and committed Esquimalt to becoming a 100 per cent renewable energy community by 2050.

What is sustainability?

One of the first and most commonly cited definitions of sustainability was created by the Brundtland Commission (formerly the World Commission on Environment and Development), led by former Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland.

Sustainability is defined as “…meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” (Brundtland Report)
