About our Organization:
The Esquimalt Recreation Centre is a multi-purpose wellness and community recreation facility. Features of the Recreation Centre include: 4500 + square foot Wellness Centre, featuring state-of-the-art cardio and strength training equipment, gymnasium, aquatic centre with six-lane 25 metre lap pool, warm “lifestyle pool” and tot pool with spray features, wheelchair accessible hot-tub, steam room, and sauna. In addition, to recreation activities and programs, there are hundreds of year-round community programs to choose from.

About the Opportunity:
The Recreation Department is seeking enthusiastic and reliable individuals to plan and lead a variety of Day Camps and Extended Care programs! We provide 10 weeks of camps that run out of the Esquimalt Recreation Centre, Archie Browning Sports Centre, and Bullen Field. This is a temporary, 12-week position requiring the incumbent to work from June 15, 2026, to September 4, 2026, with potential to stay on in the Fall for our Out of School Care program.
Our Preferred Candidate:
Reporting to the OSC & Camps Supervisor, the ideal candidate will:
- Ensure the fun and safety of all participants through active child supervision, first aid response, site safety checks, risk management practices, and positive behaviour management strategies
- Create detailed lesson plans, supply lists, and lead activities during the 10 weeks of summer camps
- Lead a variety of games, arts and crafts, sports, and outdoor recreational activities for children ages 3-14 years
- Foster an inclusive, welcoming camp environment by adapting activities, communication strategies, and supports to meet diverse physical, emotional, social, and developmental needs
- Plan and deliver developmentally appropriate, engaging, and inclusive programs that align with camp goals and participant interests
- Modify activities and behaviour supports to ensure every child can participate meaningfully and safely
- Communicate and work cooperatively with participants, parents, co-workers, and supervisors to maintain strong relationships with clear communication
- Provide excellent customer service and public relations while thriving in a fast-paced outdoor environment
- Work independently and with a co-leader to problem solve, make quick decisions, and adapt to changing situations and group dynamics
- Commit to working consistently throughout the full 10 week summer season, including mandatory June training.
Qualifications:
- Valid Standard First Aid Certificate & CPR-C
- Experience working with children ages 3-14 years in any of the following settings: day camps, sports, out of school care programs, recreational programs
- Experience working with individuals with extra support needs (behavioural or cognitive)
- Previous training/education in child or youth care
- Clean Criminal Record Check (to be completed when hired)
Salary: $23.57 ($20.68 hourly plus 14% in lieu of benefits (2024 rates))
Hours per week: Full Day Camp Leaders (up to 16 positions): 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday 8:45am – 4:15pm. Part-time Extended Care Leaders (up to 10 positions): approximately 20 hours per week, Monday-Friday 7:00am – 9:00am and 3:30pm – 5:30pm. Mandatory training will be held June 15-26th. Camps will run June 29th-Sept 4th.
