Mayor Barbara Desjardins has issued the following statement:
Today we stand in support of the Ukrainian community in the township. We stand with the people of Ukraine as this attack on their sovereignty continues by the Russian government. We stand with the individual Russians who bravely march for peace and are arrested by the state.
Our hearts go out to families who are separated, who are forced to leave their homes and who are waiting at borders, sometimes for days, trying to flee their country for safer lands.
It is hard to know what to do when we are so far away and it is easy to put our heads down. I encourage you to consider supporting our local Ukrainian Cultural Centre through their fundraising activities or volunteer requests. If it’s an option for you, you can also donate to the Canadian Red Cross’s Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal.
It is our profound hope that this conflict ends swiftly and that no more lives are lost.
