Esquimalt, BC— The Township is going out to the community to better understand parking needs in Esquimalt. This feedback—along with research and analysis—will help guide and support any updated plans and regulations.

The Integrated Parking Strategy and Regulatory Framework project has two key outcomes:

  1. A new On-Street Parking Strategy to guide decision making and implementation for publicly provided parking—including electric-vehicle charging, bicycle parking and accessible parking.
  2. An updated and modernized Parking Bylaw that ensures appropriate and desirable parking conditions are achieved through future land development.

“The Township recognizes the importance of making smart use of our shared spaces,” said Mayor Barbara Desjardins. “We want to ensure businesses, residents and local organizations have input on how to accommodate and regulate parking in the public right-of-way and in new developments. This is an important piece of how Esquimalt grows in the future.”

A survey is running from July 4-24 that asks people about their current parking habits and where they see issues or opportunities. The survey addresses both residential and business parking in efforts to better understand what the overall needs of the township are from a range of accessibility perspectives.

There will also be two information sessions offered online where participants can find out more first-hand about the project and offer their thoughts. The sessions will be held on July 12 (3–4:30 p.m.) and July 19 (6–7: 30 p.m.) and participants are asked to register.

The township has recently completed its active transportation network plan. The plan included significant public feedback about mobility within Esquimalt and how it can be improved. Parking and active transportation needs dovetail together in aspects of land use, road design and infrastructure.

Information, session registration and the survey are all found at EngagingEsquimalt.ca.
