Esquimalt Policing and Law Enforcement Advisory Panel announced today that the new agreement between the RCMP and the Province is a positive step forward for all communities in B.C.

“We are thrilled that the contract has been signed and we feel that an impediment to moving forward with policing decisions in Esquimalt has been removed,” said Panel Chair and Esquimalt Mayor Barbara Desjardins. “The signing of this contract between B.C. and the RCMP shows confidence in the ability of the RCMP to police at both the regional and municipal level.”

The Esquimalt Policing and Law Enforcement Advisory Panel has been involved in a process driven by public input since June of 2010, when it was established by provincial Order in Council #303. Along with gathering public input, the Panel conducted research, collected data from other communities, conducted a rigorous RFP process, and provided policing recommendations to Township Council, which were forwarded to the Provincial Ministry of Justice.

The public is invited to attend a meeting of the Panel on Wednesday May 9th, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. in Council Chambers. A portion of this meeting will be dedicated to answering questions and updating interested residents on the current status of the policing services proposal process.
