Esquimalt, BC—After a month-long response period, Esquimalt’s alternative approval process has been completed.
Mayor and council wish to thank all who participated in the process and provided input.
The results have been certified by the Corporate Officer and the resulting number of responses indicates that electoral approval for long-term borrowing to fund the public safety building project has been achieved.
Elector approval would not be obtained if 10 per cent of eligible voters, or 1,380 ballots were received. In total, the township received 684 response forms, or less than 5 per cent by 4:30 p.m. on the May 10 deadline.
The legislation only requires Corporate Officers to certify and determine the result of the AAP on the basis of the number of elector response forms received before the deadline and whether the proposed matter received elector approval.
In the interest of transparency, council has directed the Corporate Officer to report all information related to the elector response forms submitted by eligible electors in accordance with provincial legislative procedure.
Council will receive a staff report on the AAP process and discuss next steps on Monday, May 17 at the regular council meeting. The AAP process is one of several forthcoming steps in the public safety building project that will involve public consultation. The final building design, the rezoning of the land and other decisions are still to be determined by council and will involve multiple public input opportunities.
