Twice a year, the Esquimalt Fire Rescue Department delivers fire safety education to approximately 600 school children from kindergarten to grade 3 at local schools, Macaulay Elementary and l’école Victor Brodeur.
The “Learn Not to Burn” program teaches children about fire safety, fire prevention, and home escape planning.
In the fall, education is done in the classroom, and in the spring, outdoor activities include operating a hose line, putting out fires, crawling low through a smoke maze, and checking out equipment on fire trucks.
Children receive brochures, activity books, comic books, and a home escape plan map to complete with their parents. When children graduate from the program in grade 3, they receive a “Sparky” t-shirt.
This program receives funding from community groups, including the Esquimalt Kiwanis Club, Esquimalt Lions Club, and the Esquimalt Legion.
