About our Organization:
The Esquimalt Recreation Centre is a multi-purpose wellness and community recreation facility. Features of the Recreation Centre include: 4500 + square foot Wellness Centre, featuring state-of-the-art cardio and strength training equipment, gymnasium, aquatic centre with six-lane 25 metre lap pool, warm “lifestyle pool” and tot pool with spray features, wheelchair accessible hot-tub, steam room, and sauna. In addition, to recreation activities and programs, there are hundreds of year-round community programs to choose from.

About the Opportunity:
The Recreation Department is seeking an enthusiastic and reliable individual to support a variety of Day Camps and Extended Care programs! We provide 10 weeks of camps that run out of the Esquimalt Recreation Centre, Archie Browning Sports Centre, and Bullen Field. This is a temporary, 14-week position requiring the incumbent to work from June 1, 2026, until September 4, 2026, with potential to stay on for Fall in the Out of School Care program.
Our Preferred Candidate:
Reporting to the OSC & Camps Supervisor, the ideal candidate will:
- Organize, prepare, and distribute supplies for all camp programs to ensure smooth daily operations
- Assist with program planning, the creation of weekly schedules, and activity set-up to support high-quality program delivery
- Provide hands-on support to Summer Camp Leaders, including guidance during challenging or escalated situations, and help maintain a positive camp environment
- Help orient and assist in training seasonal staff by modeling best practices, professionalism, and positive leadership
- Foster an inclusive and supportive environment by assisting with activity adaptations and providing help to children who require additional support needs
- Communicate regularly and clearly with the supervisor to relay program updates, staffing needs, and participant concerns
- Connect with parents at drop-off and pick-up, providing excellent customer service and clear communication
- Support Licensed Extended Care programs two days a week
- Substitute into camps for staff illnesses or absences to ensure consistent safety and program quality
- Demonstrate strong problem-solving, prioritization, and adaptability in a fast-paced environment with frequent schedule and plan changes
- Work collaboratively across the camp team to support operations and ensure positive participant experiences
- Commit to working consistently throughout the full 10-week summer season, including mandatory June training.
Qualifications:
- Valid Standard First Aid Certificate & CPR-C
- Experience working with children ages 3-14 years in any of the following settings: day camps, sports, out of school care programs, recreational programs
- Experience working with individuals with extra support needs (behavioural or cognitive)
- Previous training/education in child or youth care
- Experience in Esquimalt camps an asset
- Clean Criminal Record Check (to be completed when hired).
Salary: $25.67 ($22.52 hourly plus 14% in lieu of benefits (2024 rates))
Hours per week: Approximately 40 hours per week (Anticipated schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 8:15am – 4:15pm; Tuesday, Thursday 10:00am – 6:00pm), subject to change based on operational need. Start Date – June 1: Maximum 10 hours per week assisting the Camps Supervisor with camp preparation. Training begins June 15 with hours increasing to 40 hours per week as needed.
