Detached Accessory Dwelling Units (DADUs) are relatively new in Esquimalt (since 2021) as an option for gentle infill. At this time, parcels that fit the criteria were re-zoned by the Township to permit Detached Accessory Dwelling Units.

Interest in DADUs has been increasing in the past several months, along with inquiries about the process to develop one. Staff decided that a user-friendly guide should be created to de-mystify the process, especially because many of the applicants are owner-applicants and are unfamiliar with the development process.

Development services has created a guide to DADUs for the purpose of educating the public and making the permit process more transparent and efficient. The guide will be available online for download on our website and in print at the Township Hall.

The guide aims to provide information about the entire process up front, so that the resident can decide whether building a DADU is something that they would like to pursue.

There is also cost information as well as permitting requirements. The intention is to provide comprehensive but clear information to be used by owners, realtors and builders.
