Township Crews Pinpoint Source of Contamination at Gorge Creek

News

After a lengthy investigation, Esquimalt Engineering and Public Works has traced a significant source of contamination in Gorge Creek to a location at the upper end of the collection system.

The contamination was caused by a cross connection – a situation where wastewater intended for sewer pipes is inadvertently directed through storm water pipes.

The Township has been working with the property owner to repair the pipes and recent monitoring indicates a significant drop in contamination. Based on these results, the Township will be returning to normal operations of the storm water collection system in this area. Storm water monitoring will continue for another several weeks.

The contamination was first reported to the Township on July 29, 2017 and, in partnership with Island Health, the Capital Regional District, and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, crews have been monitoring the creek and conducting an investigation since then.

The Township would like to remind residents that materials dumped into the sanitary or storm water collection systems will eventually find their way to water bodies and these materials will have a negative impact on the water, shoreline and marine wildlife in the area. Please dispose of these materials in a responsible manner.

If residents notice a spill that enters municipal roads or waterways please report it immediately by noting the location and calling the Provincial Spill Line at 1-800-663-3456. Spills reported through this number are coordinated for the appropriate response from federal, provincial and/or municipal authorities.
