Province announces approval of bylaw banning single-use plastics

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

 

Esquimalt, B.C.—The township’s pending regulation on single-use plastic bags has been given statutory approval to proceed by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy.

The Checkout Bag Regulation Bylaw received first, second and third reading in late 2019 but was not yet adopted by council, pending ministry approval.

The adoption process has now resumed with the bylaw being considered by council for adoption on March 1, 2021.

At the meeting, council will be presented with a staff report outlining next steps and rollout timelines given current circumstances.

The ministry’s announcement arrived on February 12, 2021.
