McLoughlin Point Site Unacceptable to Esquimalt Council

The Township of Esquimalt has rejected McLoughlin Point as a site for sewage treatment. The site—along with several other areas in Greater Victoria—is being considered by the Capital Regional District as a potential location for a sewage treatment facility.

“This is a unanimous decision by Council” said Mayor Barb Desjardins. “The consulting firm hired by the CRD, Stantec Consulting, has identified several issues with the site, including risks associated with remediation, the small size of the site and difficult construction conditions.”

According to the consultant’s report:

  • Treatment facilities for both liquid and solid waste streams should be located on a consolidated site.
  • The cost savings by locating both facilities on the same site is estimated at $90 million.
  • The McLoughlin Point site is too small to support both liquid and solid waste streams.

In addition, if liquid and solid treatment facilities are located at separate sites, this can mean transporting sludge through the Township using trucks, an option that Council and residents oppose.

“We urge the CRD to fully explore and evaluate alternative sites and available technologies for sewage treatment before the December 31, 2009 deadline,” said Mayor Desjardins.
