ESQUIMALT, BC—The Township of Esquimalt is looking for community support in efforts to win a $100,000 grant to benefit local sport and physical activity initiatives in the township.

The 2025 ParticipACTION Community Challenge is a national physical activity and sport initiative that encourages everyone in Canada to get active throughout June in search of Canada’s Most Active Community with the winning community being awarded $100,000.

“Esquimalt’s recreation services punch above their weight for a community of this size. Our pool and fitness centre hours are 5:30AM to 10:30PM seven days a week in addition to specialized offerings including court rentals for indoor pickleball,” said Parks and Recreation Director Steve Knoke. “Winning the additional funds would make a positive impact by supporting buying new fitness and sports equipment for Esquimalt Parks and Recreation.”

By participating in any Esquimalt Parks and Recreation physical activity in June, community members’ active minutes will be counted towards Esquimalt’s total. Activities include

  • Drop-in weight room sessions

  • Drop-in fitness classes

  • Drop-in sports

  • Drop-in swimming

  • Drop-in or registered pickleball

  • Registered fitness classes

  • Registered kids’ and youth sports

  • Registered kids’ dance programs

To help amplify the contest, Esquimalt Recreation has organized special activities this month that include fun, low-barrier activities that welcome everyone.

Esquimalt Recreation offers a wide variety of programs that serve the community by providing options for all ages and abilities. From social opportunities to competitive sport, Esquimalt Recreation’s goal is to be a place for everyone. Those experiencing financial barriers to accessing recreation programs are encouraged to see if the LIFE Program is right for them. This regional program assists individuals and households with low income to access recreation programs and services.

Individuals can pledge to get active and help boost Esquimalt’s final score by adding their Esquimalt postal code. Make the pledge.

In addition to recreational programming, Esquimalt has ample parks and trails that offer many great ways to be active outdoors. Learn more about Esquimalt parks.
