ESQUIMALT, BC—Containment and cleanup along the Gorge Creek area will continue for at least another week. While the main cause of the initial spill has been identified, Township crews continue to investigate and monitor other potential sources.

A home oil tank was found to have leaked into the ground and surrounding pipes resulting in oil appearing in Gorge Creek, the estuary and the Gorge Waterway. The Township is in discussion with the homeowner to define costs and responsibilities.

Preliminary costs for cleanup, staff time, consultants and other services indicate an excess of $50,000 with costs still ongoing. This recent spill is a stark reminder of the importance of keeping pollutants away from the ground and storm system.

To ensure that the estuary and area are properly monitored, the Township has hired wildlife consultants to assist in monitoring waterfowl and other animals that are typically present. Currently, there have been no documented wildlife in ill health or showing signs of harm.

Anyone spotting a spill, or notice the risk of one occurring, are asked to report it immediately by calling 1-800-663-3456. Anyone wanting to remove their oil tank or look for rebates on clean energy systems for their home can learn more at Esquimalt.ca.
