Esquimalt launches fire department survey to residents and businesses

Esquimalt, B.C.—The Esquimalt Fire Department is developing a strategic plan to guide the fire department over the next five years. This plan will guide the delivery of valued, cost-effective and efficient protective services to the citizens and businesses of the Township of Esquimalt, community partners and other stakeholders.

The department is including the community it serves in developing the strategic plan for 2022-2027 by way of a short survey. This input will provide meaningful insight into community needs, expectations and feedback regarding the services the department provides.

The results from this survey will be used to draft the strategic plan. The plan—with goals, timelines and measures of success—will be posted on the township’s website when completed in early 2022.   

"We’re looking to the community for input on what types of other services they want to see, be it public education targeted at kids, CPR training, and so on.", said fire chief Steve Serbic. "We also want to hear feedback about any experiences the public has had with the department. Our members have a great relationship with the community and it’s important for us to check in and ensure we’re on track."

With one fire chief, two assistant fire chiefs and 24 members, the department is responsible for a wide range of emergency and non-emergency services including urban search and rescue, medical aid responses, fire inspections for businesses, home oil tank inspections and public education around fire prevention. 

The department’s annual report outlines highlights for the year, response statistics and other operational information.

Quick facts 

  • The Esquimalt Fire Department has mutual aid agreements with CFB Esquimalt, Victoria, View Royal and Colwood;
  • In 2021, the department received an improved grade from Fire Underwriters organization, reducing fire insurance costs for multi-unit buildings, businesses and 
  • Fire department members train daily to learn new skills and maintain existing disciplines, ranging 1-2 hours per shift.
