GREATER VICTORIA – Almost 7000 students increased their activity and fruit and vegetable intake this year in the Health and Recreation Alliance’s “Eat Well Get Moving!” program that brings awareness about physical activity and nutrition directly to school aged children.

As we wrap up our 6th year we congratulate the 31 schools and 305 classrooms across Southern Vancouver Island that participated in the “Eat Well Get Moving!” program. Eat Well Get Moving! ran from February 1 - April 30 with the grand prize, a $500 Spank It Sports gift certificate, awarded on June 09, 2009 to this year’s champion school, Hillcrest Elementary.

“Eat Well Get Moving!” was developed to curb the rising incidence of childhood obesity seen throughout the Province, including right here on the Southern Island,” said Janelle Hatch, Community Nutritionist with the Vancouver Island Health Authority. “Our goal is to get our kids moving so they will stay active throughout their life – and perhaps help motivate their parents too!”

The program is a partnership between the Vancouver Island Health Authority and recreation centres throughout Greater Victoria. Eat Well Get Moving! creates awareness and educates about the importance of healthy eating and staying physically active. The program is fun and interactive and encourages school-aged children to engage in 90 minutes of activity and eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables each day, in accordance with Canada’s Food Guide and Canada’s Physical Activity Guide.

Eat well and get moving today and everyday!
