ESQUIMALT, BC—The Township of Esquimalt is undertaking a comprehensive Recreation Strategic Plan to guide the evolution of its recreational services and facilities over the next 15 years. The plan will help ensure Esquimalt’s recreation system continues to be inclusive, accessible, and responsive as the community grows and recreation trends change.
The Recreation Strategic Plan will provide a long-term roadmap for how recreation services and facilities are planned, delivered and funded. It will be informed by population trends, an assessment of existing recreation facilities, and extensive community input. The final plan will support council decision-making by clearly outlining opportunities, trade-offs, and the long-term implications of recommended actions.
“This process is an important opportunity to deepen our understanding of how residents use and value Esquimalt Recreation,” said Director of Parks and Recreation Steve Knoke. “By integrating technical analysis with community input, we’re working to develop a long term plan that aligns with our shared priorities and future needs.”
Meaningful community engagement is a key part of the project. A range of engagement activities will be used to ensure voices from across the community are heard, including residents, recreation user groups, community organizations and groups that may face barriers to accessing recreation services.
The township is launching a survey on February 11 to help gather input from residents about their recreation activities, priorities, and desired improvements. The results from the survey will be included with data and other inputs when crafting the strategic plan.
The completed plan will:
- Identify current and future recreation needs based on population trends, facility inventory, and community priorities.
- Establish short-, medium-, and long-term goals, supported by a phased implementation strategy.
- Review constraints and opportunities affecting recreation service delivery, including land availability, financial capacity, partnerships, and regional context.
- Support an inclusive and accessible recreation system that reflects the evolving needs of the Esquimalt community.
Through this collaborative and forward-looking approach, the Township of Esquimalt is working to ensure its recreation system continues to enhance quality of life for residents of all ages and abilities.
The draft plan will be presented to the public at an open house on April 11.
