FireSmart

FireSmart helps residents take practical steps to reduce wildfire risk around their homes and properties.

It focuses on the home and the area around it, where things like flying embers, dry vegetation and combustible materials can allow fire to spread.

Simple actions, such as clearing leaves and debris, maintaining vegetation and moving combustible items away from buildings, can make a home more resilient to wildfire and help reduce risk across the neighbourhood.

FireSmart home visits and assessments

FireSmart trained staff can visit your property and help identify practical ways to reduce wildfire risk around your home.

A FireSmart home visit may include:

• A walk-through of the area around your home
• Identification of materials or conditions that could increase wildfire risk
• Suggestions for simple, practical changes such as clearing debris, moving combustible items, or improving spacing around vegetation
• Information on FireSmart principles and where to find additional resources

These visits are intended to be supportive and educational. They are not inspections or enforcement actions.

Neighbourhood and strata FireSmart support

Wildfire risk reduction works best when neighbours take action together. The FireSmart Program can support neighbourhoods, stratas, multi-unit buildings and community groups that want to learn more or take practical steps together.

Support may include:

• FireSmart information sessions or presentations
• Guidance for neighbourhood clean-up activities
• Support for identifying common risk areas around buildings, shared spaces and landscaping
• Help connecting residents, property managers and community partners with FireSmart resources

This work helps build safer, more connected and more prepared neighbourhoods.

Events and public education

The FireSmart Program also provides public education through community events.

Topics may include:

• How wildfire can affect urban and coastal communities
• Understanding the home ignition zone
• Low cost FireSmart actions for renters, homeowners and stratas
• FireSmart landscaping and yard maintenance
• Preparing for smoke, heat and wildfire season
• How FireSmart connects to emergency preparedness and community resilience
