The Township of Esquimalt is gearing up again this year to participate in Bike to Work Week from May 11 – 17, 2009. Esquimalt’s registered Bike to Work Week team, “All Cranked Up”, includes municipal employees from all of Esquimalt’s departments and members of Council.

To ensure employees’ bikes are all cranked up and in prime shape for the week-long event, the Trek Bicycle Store will be holding a lunch-time Bike Maintenance Clinic. The Bike Maintenance Clinic will take place on Monday, May 11th at 12 noon at the Esquimalt Recreation Centre, 527 Fraser Street. The public is invited to attend this FREE event and to bring their bike. Please RSVP by contacting Heather Munro, Fitness Programmer, at 250-412-8502.

The excitement surrounding Bike to Work Week in Esquimalt is not without good reason.

  • Last year Esquimalt won the Local Government Challenge for having the highest staff participation rate in the Capital Region.
  • For the last four years, the Township of Esquimalt has supported Bike to Work Week with a Local Grant.
  • A Celebration Station will be held on the front lawn of the Esquimalt Municipal Hall on the morning of Friday, May 15th from 6:45 a.m. to 8:45 a.m.

Bike to Work Week is an annual event organized by the registered non-profit Bike to Work BC Society. The goal of this yearly event is to increase the number of BC residents who regularly cycle to work.

The Township of Esquimalt supports staff cycling year-round by providing a safe bike lock-up, covered bike racks, showers, and access to Recreation Centre facilities.
