Esquimalt, B.C.—Esquimalt crews have responded to reports of an oil sheen on Gorge Creek. Earlier this afternoon, a member of the public reported what appears to be oil near an outfall by Craigflower Road.
Staff responded by setting up booms along the creek to contain the contamination. While it’s too early to determine the source of the oil, crews are investigating the township’s drain network.
The public is reminded to be careful with what enters storm water collection systems. The material eventually enters aquatic environments and can have negative effects on plants, wildlife and pets. Paints, oils and other hazardous materials need to be disposed of properly.
As of Wednesday afternoon, there does not appear to be any new evidence suggesting that the spill is ongoing. Crews will continue to monitor and plan to leave the spill booms in place for a week.
Anyone spotting a spill, or notice the risk of one occurring, are asked to report it immediately by calling 1-800-663-3456.
