The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation commemorates the ongoing legacy of residential schools.
The day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities.
Flags at municipal facilities be flown at half-mast in recognition of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
On September 30, the public is invited to attend the South Island Powwow at Royal Athletic Park. The event starts at 10AM and has programming and exhibits all day.
Locally, the township will be illuminating Archie Browning in orange and has invited staff to wear their orange shirts through the week. Flags will also be lowered to half-mast. Online learning resources are posted for staff in addition to formal learning opportunities.
The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation is offering daily lunch and learn sessions. Each video will be posted on YouTube to be viewed any time.
Many families take this time to attend local events; read, watch and listen to Indigenous-created content; support an Indigenous-owned business; talk to family, friends and coworkers about reconciliation, and wear an orange shirt.
History of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Orange Shirt Day, is a grassroots campaign founded by Phyllis Webstad. Orange Shirt Day grew out of her own experiences and the experiences of other residential school survivors who attended St. Joseph’s Mission Residential School near Williams Lake, B.C. It's a day to honour the healing journeys of residential school survivors and their families and a time to engage in meaningful discussions about the history and legacy of the residential school system. 2026 marks the 13th anniversary of Orange Shirt Day.
