Greenhouse Gas Reduction Targets - Survey

April 23, 2010

Residents can now provide feedback on Esquimalt's greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets online by viewing the April 21st, 2010 open house presentation and completing a short survey. The open house took place at the Esquimalt Recreation Centre.

The Local Government Act requires that an official community plan include GHG reduction targets by May 31, 2010. Recognizing climate science, Esquimalt’s GHG reduction targets are: to reduce GHG emissions by at least 38% below 2007 levels by 2020; and at least 83% below 2007 levels by 2050.

A public hearing will be held on Monday, May 3, 2010 at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers, Esquimalt Municipal Hall, 1229 Esquimalt Road, to allow the public to make representations to Council respecting matters contained in the amending Bylaw No. 2732. The purpose of the bylaw is to add a new section to the Official Community Plan dealing with the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

The Township of Esquimalt will begin development of a Community Climate Action Plan this summer, and expects to have a draft by the spring of 2011.
