The flags at Municipal Hall will be lowered in recognition of International Holocaust Remembrance Day on Friday, January 27, 2023 and National Day of Remembrance of the Québec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia on Sunday, January 29, 2023.

Overview

International Holocaust Remembrance Day honours the more than 6 million Jews who died during the holocaust and those who were victimized as a result of the Nazi regime’s atrocities because of their ethnicity, faith, sexual orientation, disabilities, or political views.

Annually on January 27, we honour the courage, strength, and resilience of all Holocaust survivors, and their descendants, 40,000 of whom came to Canada. This day ensures that the horrors endured by millions of Jews not be forgotten and encourages us all to speak out against hatred and discrimination.

January 29, 2023 marks the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attack at the Centre culturel islamique de Québec in Sainte-Foy that killed 6 people and caused serious injury to 19 others.

The National Day of Remembrance of the Québec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia allows us to honor the victims of this tragic event and express solidarity with all those impacted including the survivors, the wounded, families and friends, numerous communities locally and across the country, and the first responders whose lives are forever changed. To ensure that we have an inclusive and equitable community, it is critical that we denounce Islamophobia and all other forms of racism, hate, and religious discrimination and take action to fight against them.

The flags will be lowered on January 27, and raised on the morning of January 30 based on staff work schedule.
