The Township of Esquimalt welcomes Steve Serbic as its new Fire Chief effective November 8, 2021.

Serbic has over 24 years of firefighting experience, and several years of leadership experience in the fire service, most recently at Surrey Fire where he was an Assistant Chief of Operations. Prior to that, he worked as an Assistant Chief at the Township for 3.5 years.

Serbic has a passion for health and wellness, empowering others, and building positive relationships. Off duty, he is well known as a mental health advocate and has travelled across North America as a keynote speaker engaging corporations and fire departments.

“Serving the community and being there for people on their worst days keeps me going day in and day out,” said Serbic. “Over the years, whether it was as a firefighter, captain or a chief officer, I have always enjoyed working together as a team.”

The hiring process was expedited—the posting only opening October 4. Factors such as the competitive marketplace as well as Serbic’s established positive history within the department and within the community prompted the appointment.

The previous chief resigned at the beginning of October after over 6 years with the department, with several successes during his tenure including better incorporating the use of technology in department operations and adding new services such as urban search and rescue.
