Esquimalt, BC—As of 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17 2020, Esquimalt Recreation Centre and Archie Browning Sports Centre will close to the public for regular programming.

An exception to the closure will be spring break camps. These camps provide a needed service to families in the community and it is the Township’s goal at this time to keep them running until the end of spring break on March 27.

It’s important to note that the camps are operating under the strict health procedures outlined by provincial health authorities and may close should staff receive new information that makes it essential to do so.

“We take the safety of our staff and public seriously and are constantly balancing community needs with the necessary prudence this situation requires,” said Mayor Barbara Desjardins. “We are in regular communication with health leaders and our neighbouring municipalities to ensure that we are getting up-to-the-minute information in these rapidly evolving circumstances.”

An overview of recreation service changes:

  • All programs currently in progress will be cancelled immediately and refunds processed appropriately.
  • New programs scheduled to start (prior to April 14, 2020) will be delayed or cancelled.
  • All rentals currently scheduled in the Archie Browning Sports Centre and Esquimalt Rec Centre up to and including April 13, 2020 are cancelled and refunds are being processed.
  • All memberships will be put on hold with an extension provided when activities resume.

Municipal hall is remaining open at this time; however the public is being actively encouraged to conduct business online or over the phone as much as possible. Tree permits, building and development permits, business licences and other services can be done over the phone or online. The Esquimalt Archives are closed to the public until further notice. Kitchen scraps and garbage pickup will continue on its regular schedule.

Contact information for departments, application forms and information about recreation closures can be found on the municipal website or by calling main reception at 250-414-7100. Information and updates related to COVID-19 can be found at Esquimalt.ca/covid19.
