The Shake Zone Earthquake Simulator will be stationed at the Archie Browning Sports Centre parking lot, adjacent to Ribfest at Bullen Park, on Sunday September 10 from noon to 6 p.m. The simulator, operated by Motion Safe, safely allows people to experience what a significant (magnitude 8) earthquake really feels like, while increasing public awareness around local earthquake risk.
In addition to the earthquake simulator, representatives from the Esquimalt Emergency Program and sponsors will be on site to provide information on how to prepare for, respond to, and recover from earthquakes, tsunamis, heat waves, and other disasters.
Natural Resources Canada estimates that there is a 30% chance that a major earthquake will strike BC in the next 50 years. The Insurance Bureau of Canada commissioned a study in 2013 that indicated such an earthquake could result in $75 billion in overall economic losses.
The Shake Zone will be making nine stops across the region to raise awareness about this important issue and help ensure individuals know what it means to be prepared.
The Local Government Emergency Program Advisory Commission (LGEPAC) has partnered with the Insurance Bureau of Canada and Fortis BC to bring the Shake Zone Earthquake Simulator to our region.
