Capital West Accessibility Advisory Committee Vacancy
We are currently accepting applications to volunteer as Esquimalt's representative on the Capital West Accessibility Advisory Committee.
The Capital West Accessibility Advisory Committee meets a minimum of four (4) times per year at 2:00 PM on the fourth Wednesday of February, May, September and November. Committee meetings are hosted on an annual rotational basis by the member municipalities.
Eligibility criteria: An individual who has a disability, supports someone with a disability, or works with organizations who supports persons with disabilities.
Term length: September 2025 - December 31, 2026.
Application deadline: 4:00 PM, August 29, 2025.

About the Committee
The Capital West Accessibility Advisory Committee is comprised of citizen representatives from partner municipalities. Partner municipalities include the City of Colwood, Township of Esquimalt, District of Highlands, City of Langford, District of Metchosin, District of Sooke, and Town of View Royal. The Committee will review the Township’s internal practices for making information, activities, and environments sensible, meaningful, and usable for as many people as possible.
The Terms of Reference outlines the Committee’s purpose and structure.
Committee meetings will be hosted on an annual rotational basis by the member municipalities; the current member host is the City of Colwood. Meetings will be held in the City of Colwood Council Chambers; members of the public are welcome to join the meeting.
Accessibility Plan
The Accessibility Plan was developed to improve accessibility to our municipal services, facilities, and natural and built environments, and reduce challenges people experience with our:
- Information
- Communications
- Technologies
- Policies
- Practices; and
- Infrastructure
The Accessibility Plan will also help to inform the planning of future activities with a long-term goal of becoming a barrier-free community.

Public Engagement
In July 2024, the Capital West Accessibility Advisory Committee, with the assistance of consultants Changing Paces, conducted a series of seven public engagement sessions to receive feedback on accessibility barriers and solutions in all seven partner municipalities. A summary of the feedback, produced by Changing Paces, can be found below. The feedback we received at these engagement sessions will inform the development of our initial Accessibility Plan. Once completed, a copy of the Accessibility Plan will be shared on this page.
Two engagement surveys were conducted in 2024. Survey 1 was initiated to understand how to best engage the broader accessibility community. Survey 2 asked respondents for their accessibility experiences respecting each member municipality and will inform the upcoming facilitated engagement sessions and assist with the development of an Accessibility Plan for the Township.
