Get to know the community!
Come for the good karma, stay for the snacks and great people.
Township staff, community members and VicPD will be on site at the Wholesale Club for a community graffiti cleanup. All painting materials will be provided. Please wear clothing you can paint in!
What is ETAG?
Esquimalt Together Against Graffiti (ETAG) is a partnership between the Township of Esquimalt and VicPD that works with community volunteers to reduce graffiti in our community. Cleaning up graffiti promptly sends a message that tagging is not welcome in the area. Graffiti-style murals what have received permission from the owner and/or the township are not considered tagging.
The program works in two ways:
- Members of the public are encouraged to report graffiti on public property—buildings, hydro poles, utility boxes, etc.
- Trained volunteers will clean up the graffiti with materials provided by the township.
VicPD and township staff support volunteers with training, materials and resources. While all instances of graffiti and vandalism are reported to VicPD, the program focusses on public property only.
Regardless if tagging is on public or private property, graffiti is a crime. Regular reporting helps VicPd document graffiti as part of their investigations and to identify the culprits.
Graffiti incidents can be reported by the public online at vicpd.ca or call VicPD non-emergency at 250-995-7654.
Details
Why should someone volunteer with ETAG?
Esquimalt residents have a strong sense of community pride; this program creates an opportunity for members of the public to volunteer, meet their neighbours and contribute to the township’s beauty.
Why is private property not part of this program?
Keeping private property clear of graffiti is part of our Maintenance of Property Bylaw and is the owner’s responsibility. The township does not have the resources or authority to include private property as part of ETAG.
Why was the program on hiatus?
This program was paused due to resource constraints but has been revitalized through a partnership with the township and VicPD.
How are volunteers supported?
They will receive training from staff and supplied with the painting materials needed.
REPORT GRAFFITI ON PUBLIC PROPERTY
If you see graffiti in Esquimalt, please report it to the appropriate organization.
ETAG was proud to host TAGS 2009; an international anti-graffiti symposium.
