National Truth and Reconciliation Day Orange Shirt Day

Thursday, September 30, 2021 - 00:00 to 23:55
When: September 30, 2021 - 12:00AM to 11:55PM

Orange Shirt Day began in 2013 when Phyllis Webstad told her orange shirt story.

Phyllis attended St. Joseph’s Mission residential school in Williams Lake, BC, in the 70s. On her first day of school, her crisp new orange shirt—a gift from her grandmother—was stripped away from her and never returned. To Phyllis, the colour orange has always reminded her of her experiences at residential school.

It provides an opportunity to recognize and commemorate the tragic history and ongoing legacy of residential schools, and to honour their survivors, their families and communities.

Wear orange on September 30, now a federal holiday, in the spirit of healing and reconciliation, and to declare that every child matters.
