Esquimalt is ready to Shakeout! On October 20, 2016 at 10:20 a.m. the Township will be joining thousands of British Columbians to Drop, Cover, and Hold On in the Great British Columbia ShakeOut. The Township encourages households, businesses, schools and others to participate at www.shakeoutbc.ca.

As part of Shakeout, the Township will also be testing its online emergency banner from 10:20 a.m. to 4 p.m. During that time website visitors will see a test emergency banner on every page of the website. The banner will provide a link to a test emergency information page.

The Great British Columbia Shakeout will be the largest earthquake drill in Canada and is aiming to have over one million participants across the province this year.

The goal of this drill is simple – to promote earthquake awareness and personal emergency preparedness by practicing “Drop, Cover, Hold On.”

  • DROP to the floor;
  • Take COVER under a desk or sturdy piece of furniture and protect your head and torso; and,
  • HOLD ON to the piece of furniture until the shaking stops.

Most injuries and deaths from earthquakes in North America are the result of moving, toppling, and falling objects. The “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” drill remains the best method of minimizing casualties for the most number of people affected by an earthquake.
