Township Holds 2017 Tax Increase to 0.5%

Esquimalt Council has approved a 2017 budget of $42.6 million which includes a 0.5% increase in municipal tax revenue requirements over 2016.

Council adopted Financial Plan Bylaw, 2017, No. 2890 and the Tax Rates Bylaw, 2017, No.2891, at its April 24, 2017 Meeting of Council.

The modest increase was achieved while maintaining core municipal services, replenishing reserve funds and budgeting $7.6 million for capital costs and infrastructure improvements.

“This budget is about economic development and positioning our community for the future,” said Acting Mayor Beth Burton-Krahn. “This year there will be several developments taking shape, including the Esquimalt Town Square and the Adventure Park on Fraser Street. Our focus will continue to be on sustainable development and maintaining municipal infrastructure.”

The 2017 budget is shaped by strategic priorities set out by Council in its planning processes, and by public input at Council meetings focussing on budget preparation.

Council’s strategic priorities for 2017 include:

  • Continuing to enhance the health and liveability of the community;
  • Enhancing relationships with municipal neighbours and other levels of government;
  • Encouraging a resilient and diverse economic environment; and,
  • Continuing to address the operational and financial requirements of municipal infrastructure.
