Located next to downtown Victoria, the Township of Esquimalt, with a population of over 17,000, is home to Canada’s Pacific Naval Fleet. The community boasts extensive amenities including beautiful parks and beaches, scenic waterfront walkways as well as modern recreational facilities, schools and commercial services.

The Development Services department is seeking a motivated individual to fill a regular full-time Planning Technician position. Reporting to the Director of Development Services, the Planning Technician is responsible for reviewing permit applications to ensure compliance with regulations, procedures, bylaws, official community plans and Council policies. The incumbent will produce maps and reports using the Geographic Information System (GIS), prepare illustrative materials using graphic software, and conduct research related to planning and development issues. This position is responsible for the administration of the Design Review Committee, which meets monthly.

The ideal candidate will have a Planning Technical School Diploma (2 years) or equivalent education, plus 3 years of related experience, preferably in a local government setting including experience using Microsoft Office Suite, ESRI’s mapping applications, and graphic software. Familiarity with Microsoft SQL server and AutoCAD would be an asset. Other qualifications include:

  • Ability to conduct research, analyze problems, and present conclusions;
  • Demonstrated customer service skills and ability to deal in a courteous and tactful manner with the public, contractors and developers; and
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

This position involves working some irregular hours, including evenings and weekends.

Salary: $32.95 – $35.57 hourly (2020 rates) plus benefits
