Located adjacent to downtown Victoria, Esquimalt is a residential community (population 17,000) with extensive amenities including beautiful parks and beaches, scenic waterfront walkways as well as modern recreational facilities, schools and commercial services.

Esquimalt Fire/Rescue is seeking an innovative, progressive, and energetic leader to fill a full-time, regular Assistant Fire Chief position.

Reporting to the Fire Chief, the Assistant Fire Chief provides support with the strategic direction, leadership, and management for one of two portfolios (Department and Community Services) within Esquimalt Fire/Rescue. This position will be responsible for the Department Services portfolio; however, the portfolios may be shifted periodically to provide for developmental opportunities. As an Assistant Fire Chief you will fulfill requirements as a Local Assistant to the Fire Commissioner and act as a Duty Chief.

The ideal candidate will possess relevant post-secondary education augmented by several years of experience as a fire fighter in a leadership role. You possess qualifications that will clearly demonstrate your ability to manage the strategic leadership, administrative and operational functions of a complex organization as well as in building effective relationships with all stakeholders and the public. You are an effective communicator and a leader of innovation and change, and your values align with the Township’s core values of accountability, integrity, respect, service excellence, and passion.

We require a candidate that can confidently organize the fire ground and related emergencies using the incident command model, incorporating strategies and tactics to ensure life safety of all first responders and the public. The successful candidate possesses practical operational experience as an Incident Commander at a wide range of events.

Please note as a condition of ongoing employment you must:

  • maintain a successful police information check, including a vulnerable sector check;

  • live within defined proximity of the municipality’s fire hall;

  • agree to share on-call duty chief responsibilities after regular work hours; and,

  • possess and maintain a valid class 3 BC driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
