Garbage Collection Public Information Program

Due to an increase in the incidence of non-compliance of Esquimalt’s Garbage Disposal Bylaw No. 2630, Esquimalt’s Public Works Department will be embarking on a public information program in the coming weeks.

Bylaw 2630 regulates the size, type and number of garbage receptacles allowed per household, and what materials can be included in the receptacle. It also describes where the receptacles should be located for pickup.

Recent violations of the bylaw include:

  • Overfilling of receptacles
  • Leaking receptacles
  • Inaccessible receptacles or unacceptable location (access, grade, etc)
  • Loose lids
  • Unacceptable materials in receptacles (recyclables, hazardous waste, unbagged dog waste)

These violations increase workload and also put Public Works crews at risk of injury.

The Public Works Department proposes the following public information program over the coming weeks:

  1. Receptacles in violation will not be picked up, but will be tagged with a sticker identifying the type of violation. An information sheet on the bylaw will be left at the residence, along with contact information at the Public Works Department.
  2. The refuse crew will record the tagged address, reason for violation, and forward this information to the Public Works Manager.
  3. Residents can contact the Public Works Department to review the situation and find solutions to the violation. See contact numbers below.
  4. The tagged receptacle and its contents are the responsibility of the resident. Refuse crews will pick up the receptacle at the next scheduled pick up time provided the violation has been corrected.
