Esquimalt Policing and Law Enforcement Advisory Panel

Who are we and why are we here?

The Esquimalt Policing and Law Enforcement Advisory Board (the Advisory Board) was established in response to the Victoria Police Department Police Act Audit:  Service Level Review (the Audit).  The purpose of the Advisory Board is to submit a report to the Solicitor General and Director of Police Services recommending a policing and law enforcement model to serve the municipality and meet the legal requirements set out in the Police Act. This report is to be completed by June 2011.

The Esquimalt Policing and Law Enforcement Advisory Board is chaired by Mayor Barb Desjardins with four additional members appointed, after an application process, for a one-year term. Three appointments were made by the Solicitor General of British Columbia and one by Esquimalt Council.

A key component in determining what type and level of police services are best suited for the Township of Esquimalt depends on feedback from community members, including residents and local businesses owners.  Board members are intent on addressing concerns around current policing in Esquimalt and finding ways to build on the strong resource-base that already exists within the Township.

Recent activities of the Board include holding community input meetings to gauge public opinion on local policing and collecting data from other regional municipalities. These activities will assist the Board in finding ways to improve policing within the Township.
