Emergency Program

Emergency Radio Communications

Maintaining a communications link is a vital function of the Esquimalt Emergency Program. Emergency Radio Communications provides communications back-up within Esquimalt and between Greater Victoria municipalities in the event that traditional means of communication are lost.

Emergency Radio Communications consists of amateur radio enthusiasts, who operate:

  • Radio equipment under the call signs of VE7EEP and VE7EEM
  • An Icom HF radio
  • 2-metre base station running packet communications
  • 2-metre portables
  • A citizens’ band and personal portable radios for short distance communication
  • A communications trailer to provide further back-up in case the main communications centre is unable to function.

Amateur radio operators are encouraged to volunteer to maintain operating skills and Emergency Radio Communications is able to provide support to volunteers, who are interested in obtaining their amateur radio license.

Emergency Radio Communications meets every Wednesday evening at the Emergency Program office to test equipment and practice message handling skills.
