Donations

The Township of Esquimalt welcomes the donation of benches, picnic tables, and trees by residents to enhance Esquimalt parks.

Guidelines for Donations
1. Use

Once the donated item is installed it becomes the property of the municipality and is for the use and enjoyment of the general public.

2. Maintenance

The municipality maintains the item and repairs or replaces any damage due to natural conditions or vandalism. The donor has no obligation or right to maintain or tamper with the donated item or the area immediately surrounding it. This includes a restriction on planting or maintaining any plant material.

3. The municipality reserves the right to:
  • Determine the type and style of benches and other furniture, taking into consideration maintenance requirements and design of the area.
  • Approve the wording on plaques. Memory words and birth and death dates cannot be used.
  • Approve the location of the donation item.
  • Move the donated item to accommodate unforeseen future events.
  • Deny any donation.
4. Plaques

Plaques cannot be placed on or near trees. A small inscription that describes the donation can be added to a large plaque located in each of the major parks or recreation facilities. Donations for other areas are noted on a plaque at the Esquimalt Recreation Centre or at the Esquimalt Sports Centre.

5. Life Span

Most donations have a limited life span. The donations are limited to the life span of the donation (for example, a park bench donation is limited to 20 years: the typical lifespan of a bench in a park). At the end of the life span, the donor is offered the opportunity to purchase a new bench and continue the donation.

Donors can pre-pay for any number of successive terms at the current replacement cost of the bench. If the donor is unwilling or unable to agree to this, the bench becomes available to another donor. Existing donors are given a life span term from the date of implementation of the Donations Policy.

6. Cost
  • The price of the donation includes installation costs.
  • The donor pays for the cost of the plaque.

Donation prices are:

Bench (on existing cement slab)  $1,800
