Grand Opening of Esquimalt Active Park
April 17, 2012
The Township of Esquimalt held a grand opening of Esquimalt Active Park on April 17th at 11:00 am. The park, located at 527 Fraser Street adjacent to the Recreation Centre, features nine pieces of exercise equipment placed around a short warm-up track and a green space area for stretching. It was made possible through funding from the Province of BC, the Government of Canada, RBC and the BC Walking Challenge.
“This is a welcome and innovative addition to our parks system,” said Mayor Barbara Desjardins. “It brings fitness opportunities outdoors, is free to use and will appeal to all ages and abilities. Thank-you to our funding partners—and Township staff—for making the park happen.”
Added Debora Linehan, Regional Vice President for RBC South Vancouver Island: "After 50 years of providing the Esquimalt community with important financial services and advice, RBC Esquimalt is proud to make a financial donation to help establish this park.”
Esquimalt Parks and Recreation introduced a new program at the event: e=SeniorFit. The free six-week program led by Esquimalt fitness trainers includes a gentle workout routine and step-by-step instruction on the safe and effective use of all outdoor fitness pieces in the new park. Free orientation sessions of the park and fitness equipment can also be booked at the Esquimalt Recreation Centre from April 18th through May 31st.
The Esquimalt Active Park has been made possible through funding from the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program, the Age-friendly BC grant program (a partnership between the Province of British Columbia and the Union of British Columbia Municipalities), the Healthy Families BC Walking Challenge and the Royal Bank of Canada.
