Global Outreach Supports Nepalese Orphanage

As part of the corporate value of stewardship, several employees at the Township have initiated a Global Outreach program to help less fortunate individuals in other countries. Sonja Zupanec, one of the founding project coordinators, says the project is “a small grassroots approach to supporting positive change.”
In the last two years, employees and members of Council have raised over $13 000 through payroll deductions to contribute to the Save Child Blessing Home Orphanage in Nepal. “Because the money is sent directly to the orphanage,” says Zuapanec, “there is confidence that one hundred per cent of the funds are being used for the well-being of the children.”
Funds were used to pay for rent and to purchase basic school supplies, soap, shoes, and food for children in the orphanage.
Nepal, a small country located in the Himalayan Mountains between India and China (Tibet) is one of the poorest and least developed nations in the world. Most people exist there on subsistence farming and do not have access to electricity, running water, medical care, or education.
Zupanec adds, “I think it’s important for employee groups to think about and act on issues of common interest... whether the projects we support are half a world away or right in our own municipality, we can promote positive change.”
