Secondary Suites
After careful and lengthy consideration, and after several public information sessions, Esquimalt Mayor and Council have amended the Official Community Plan and Zoning Bylaw to allow for Secondary Suites under certain conditions. The bylaws were passed at an October 19th Council Meeting.
Council’s primary goals in allowing Secondary Suites are to 1) provide additional housing units in the community, 2) help out homeowners with their mortgages, and 3) ensure that suites are safe for residents.
Esquimalt’s Development Services has developed a brochure to help residents and property owners understand the new Secondary Suite regulations created as a result of the bylaw amendment. It also describes the process for building a new suite or renovating or legalizing an existing suite.
The brochure also details:
- Where suites are allowed
- How to apply for a permit
- Code and safety issues
- How complaints will be handled
